I missed a lot of that when it came out. Only recently have I begun trying to catch up because I have the time. I played it during our most recent eclipse, though one could hardly detect it here in California. I didn't see it in progress but those who were tracking it nearby said the small bells coincided with the beginning of the Sun's return. Of course I know science but we still think back to old beliefs. Bells, drums, and horns were all said to drive away evil spirits, right?

I just saw you play this with your stellar band here in Mexico City on April 19, 2024 at the Blackberry Auditorium as this tune was part of the Foxtrot set. I brought my wife and daughter (who never heard Foxtrot) and she loved it! Can Utility is the dark-horse of Foxtrot and easily one of the strongest songs on the album. Mexico City loved it! Steve, thank you for playing here and presenting your presentation of your solo music and the Genesis body of work. This stuff will never age.

One of my favorite Genesis song ever. Just sad he has not commented on his solo that was a bit further in the song, as to me it is one of my favorite Hacket solo along with Firth of Fifth

for me the best guitar solo ever. Probably the most solo I have listened to in my life. Together with the band, it has such a power. It goes deep under my skin.

Gracias Sr Hackett. Gracias por mantener el legado aun vivo

This track was my gateway into Genesis … at 18 months old. Still has an incredible atmosphere to it after all the years past. I’ve thought about it for the longest time & to me, ‘Heart’ is teenage sexual frustration (if you think of it in context to the Lamb story). That major chord at the end into ‘Time’ is the yes of Rael’s date who agrees to go out with him after plodding along moodily wondering if he’ll ever get a GF.

It's a pity that- in the usual Hackett-style- practically no credits go to wonderfull Randy Crawford. It is how Steve' sbrain works. I did it. A typical backstreet boy trait he suffers from and makes it impossible to be a star.

probably the most underrated Genesis song ever. And considering Genesis itself is underrated, that says alot! I've seen Hackett perform this 2x on their Foxtrot at 50 tour..... guys.... it raises hairs. Its INCREDIBLE. Steve does those songs BETTER THAN EVER. And Craig Blundell is the best drummer he's had. OUT OF THIS WORLD.

My only regret at this late point in my life is that for some unfathomable reason, I didn’t get deeply into Genesis back in the early to mid-70’s. I was very much into rock/prog rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, King Crimson, Yes, ELP, even American bands like CSNY, Doobie Bros, Allman Bros, Eagles and even less know bands like Gentle Giant, Mainhorse, Roxy Music, and others. I still adore those bands till this day and listen to them all the time. Of course I had heard of the band Genesis and of the members Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett, and of their albums Lamb and Selling England. I’d heard bits of their songs here and there at friends’ places. I’d never listened to an entire early Genesis song in the early to mid-70’s. By the late 70’s Phil had kind of turned to mainstream pop (only in my opinion of course) and although I had heard their early work was great, by then, adulthood had come roaring in. Honestly, my late 60’s to mid-70’s music collection was enough to sustain me. I didn’t feel a need for new rock in my life. I did get a little bit into punk and new-wave (Ultravox, New Order, Smiths, Depeche), and even some sub-genres of rap (anyone heard of Nas?) but over the last decade or so, I’ve reverted to my love for late 60’s to mid-70’s rock/prog rock and classical music (which sometimes includes certain types of opera - if you want to feel exhilarating goosebumps, listen to the alien diva’s opera piece in the film Fifth Element on UA-cam). Anyway, a few months ago, Firth of Fifth popped up on one of my Facebook music groups. I’d seen the song title before and probably heard a few seconds of it here and there but not the whole song. This time, I decided to listen to the song in its entirety, but while I was busy doing other things (because I still didn’t think Genesis required total attention). The song sounded pleasant but my ears pricked up when the short flute piece started (was that Peter Gabriel?). Then the pleasant song resumed until Steve’s solo. I don’t mean to imply that the song was mediocre. Far from it. The title, the lyrics, the music all are excellent. There are many epic songs that play in my head or my stereo - Epitaph, Echoes, Ancients, Thick as a Brick, Since I’ve been Loving You are just a few examples. However, Steve’s Firth solo is at a different level. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since then. I’ve heard his solo hundreds of times in the last few months and it’s plays either on my AirPods or in my head if I forget my pods on my daily walks in Manhattan. It’s not a bad experience as obsessions go. I’m 65 now, with stage iv metastatic cancer and I recently told my wife and my best friend (just in case she decides on something else:), I’d like Steve’s Firth of Fifth solo played at my funeral (if that’s even a thing lol). For those of you who read my long and boring comment, thank you. And thank you Steve for bringing “undiscovered” music to a jaded person! Your “undiscovered” (this term only applies to me so please don’t be upset) is now my all time favorite.

The best side of any album, concluded by the best song. Ritchie Haven's vocals make the floorboards vibrate, and the guitar soars into the sky. Magnificent song, and my personal favourite.

Love this song Steve. Not sure if this was offered, but If the boys in Genesis rejected this one they were out of their minds. I think Steve Walsh was brilliant on the vocals. I could easily picture either Pete of Phil singing this too.

Young pup here. Only been listening to Steve for nearly 50 years now. Starting with Nursery Cryme (the first great Genesis album, IMHO). See him play live if you get the chance. He still has the chops. I’ve seen him every time he’s played live in Los Angeles over the last ten years (last time was November, 2023). Always try to get a seat in the first few rows. Well worth the money spent.
